Kata kerja to be — bentuk positif

S + am / is / are + (N / Adj)

Dalam bahasa Indonesia, kalimat seperti "Aku mahasiswa" dan "Aku capek" tidak memakai kata kerja penghubung. Bahasa Inggris WAJIB punya kata kerja di setiap kalimat, jadi keduanya harus memakai to be. Bentuknya mengikuti subjek: I → am, he/she/it dan kata benda tunggal → is, you/we/they dan kata benda jamak → are. Jebakan umum: Kalimat yang menyatakan keadaan dalam bahasa Indonesia tidak memakai kata kerja ("Aku capek"), jadi to be mudah terlupa: I tired ✗, I am tired ✓.
