not nearly as と nowhere near
S + be + not nearly as + Adj + as + O · S + be + nowhere near + Adj差がわずかではなく、非常に大きいことを強調します。not nearly as ... as は「はるかに及ばない」という意味です。nowhere near は形容詞にも名詞句にも使えます。not quite as ... as は反対に「少しだけ及ばない」という意味です。 よくある誤り: not nearly と not quite は違います: not nearly as good は「はるかに劣る」、not quite as good は「少しだけ劣る」です。
