Gramática

Substantivos no plural

N + -s / -es / -ies

Quando há mais de um, o substantivo muda de forma, mesmo que já exista um número antes dele. Em geral acrescenta-se -s; depois de -s, -sh, -ch, -x acrescenta-se -es; consoante + y vira -ies. Alguns irregulares: man–men, woman–women, child–children, foot–feet, person–people. Erros comuns: em português o número aparece também no artigo e no adjetivo («dois livros»), mas em inglês o substantivo precisa receber o -s mesmo com um numeral antes: two book ✗, two books ✓.

There are three buses.

Há três ônibus.

Six children are in the garden.

Seis crianças estão no jardim.

Many people live here.

Muitas pessoas moram aqui.

there is / there are

There is + Nsg · There are + Npl

Usado para dizer que algo existe ou está em algum lugar. O there aqui não significa «lá»; é apenas um sujeito fictício. Use is ou are conforme o substantivo que vem logo depois. Erros comuns: em português usamos «ter» ou «haver» («Tem um livro aqui»), e é fácil traduzir por have: Here have a book ✗, There is a book ✓.

There is a book on the table.

Há um livro em cima da mesa.

There are two hotels near here.

Há dois hotéis perto daqui.

Is there a bank near here?

Há algum banco perto daqui?

There isn't a bank here.
