在正式书面语中，than 或 as 之后的分句可以把助动词倒装到主语前面。只有当该分句的主语是较长的名词短语时才这样做；主语是代词时不倒装。目的是让长名词短语落到句末，方便阅读。 常见错误：代词不要倒装：more than did he ✗, more than he did ✓。
例句
The scheme cost far more than did the original plan.
那个方案比最初的计划贵得多。
Rural voters backed the bill, as did most of the northern councils.
农村选民支持这项法案，北部大多数议会也是如此。
She earns less than do her former classmates.
