转述第三类条件句时，两个分句本来就已经退到最远的时态，所以不能再往后退。转述第二类条件句时也保持不变。这是时态后移规则停止的地方，学习者常常退得过头。 常见错误：不要再后移：She said that if she had had known ✗, if she had known ✓.
例句
She said that if she had known, she would have called.
她说如果她早知道，就会打电话了。
He explained that if he were younger, he would apply.
他解释说，如果他再年轻一些，就会去申请。
They claimed the roof would have held but for the wind.
他们声称，要不是因为风，屋顶本来是撑得住的。
I told him that had we been warned, we would have left.
