书面语中表示结果的四个连接词。hence 通常接名词短语或简短的从句；thus 接完整从句或 V-ing；thereby 总是接 V-ing，意思是“由此”。它们不是连词，所以不能用逗号连接两个分句。 常见错误：这是连接副词，不是连词：Costs rose, therefore the margin fell ✗（用逗号连接）, Costs rose; therefore, the margin fell ✓.
例句
The line was cut; hence the delay.
线路被切断了，因此出现了延误。
Thus the estimate must be revised.
因此，预算必须修订。
He signed the waiver, thereby losing the right to appeal.
