while 有时间和对比两种意思，所以在书面语中容易产生歧义。whilst 是英式英语的变体，只表示对比，语气正式。whereas 只表示对比，绝不表示时间，因此在学术写作中是最稳妥的选择。 常见错误：想表达清晰的对比义时用 whereas：While he read, she wrote 既可以理解为同时，也可以理解为对比。

Whereas the north grew, the south stagnated.
