Cloze Reading — CEFR 5

Cloze reading is the familiar "read a passage, pick the word for the blank" question from the real CEFR reading section — unlike simple fill-in-the-blank, the blank sits inside a whole passage, so you have to read and understand the surrounding context to infer the best word. The blanked word is always a keyword from CEFR 5 reading content, never a random stitched-together sentence.

Large language models improved for years by an unglamorous route: more data and more computation. Both inputs are now running into limits of a different kind. The supply of high-quality human text is __ and largely already used.Synthetic text can extend the supply, but training a model mainly on its own output degrades it. Researchers describe the failure mode as a narrowing: rare constructions disappear first. Curated data therefore now carries a price, and licensing deals have followed. This alters the competitive landscape more than any technical advance. A laboratory without an archive, a publisher or a platform must buy access from one. Open-weight models complicate the picture in a useful way. They are usually behind the frontier, yet good enough for most applications and far cheaper to run. For a hospital or a ministry, auditability may matter more than the last percentage point of accuracy. Evaluation remains the weakest part of the field. Benchmarks leak into training sets, after which a high score proves little. Serious deployments now rely on private test sets and on measured failure rates in real use. That is slower, unfashionable and the only evidence worth acting on.

FAQ

How do I figure out the missing word?

Read the whole surrounding passage (not just the sentence with the blank), then use the context to infer the word that fits best — the same inferential reading skill the real IELTS & TOEIC exam tests.

Is the blanked word an obscure or difficult one?

No — it's a keyword from the CEFR 5 passage's own glossary, meaning it's an important word for that content, not a rare character or something above your level.
