Question 1

What is CEFR?

Accepted Answer

CEFR is the Common European Framework of Reference, published by the Council of Europe. It is not an exam but a scale: six levels from A1 (absolute beginner) to C2 (near-native mastery). IELTS, TOEIC and most English certificates map onto it.

Question 2

How many CEFR levels are there?

Accepted Answer

Six, in three bands. A1–A2 is basic: greetings, shopping, talking about yourself. B1–B2 is independent: you can work and study in English, and B2 is what most employers ask for. C1–C2 is proficient: academic and professional English. Each level sets its own vocabulary, grammar and four-skills targets.

Question 3

How long does it take to learn CEFR?

Accepted Answer

Cambridge estimates roughly 180–200 guided hours per level. At an hour a day that is 2-3 months for A1, another 4-6 for A2, 6-9 for B1 and 9-12 for B2; B2 to C1 and C2 usually takes longer because it depends on reading and listening to a lot of real material.

Question 4

Which level should I start from?

Accepted Answer

Starting over? Begin at A1. If you kept something from school, take the placement test so you do not spend weeks on what you already know. English RankUp runs one continuous pathway from A1 to C2 with lessons, drills and mock exams at every level.

Question 5

Is learning CEFR online effective?

Accepted Answer

Learning CEFR online is very effective with the right method. At English RankUp, each lesson includes vocabulary with audio, grammar explained in English, real-life dialogues, and practice exercises. You can study anytime, anywhere, at your own pace.

Question 6

How is CEFR different from IELTS and TOEIC?

Accepted Answer

CEFR is the scale; IELTS and TOEIC are exams measured against it. The usual mapping: IELTS 4.0–5.0 ≈ B1, 5.5–6.5 ≈ B2, 7.0–8.0 ≈ C1; TOEIC 550–780 ≈ B1, 785–940 ≈ B2, above 945 ≈ C1. Study by CEFR level so you work on the gaps first, then pick whichever exam your goal needs.
