Kể lại lời người khác thì động từ lùi một thì: hiện tại đơn thành quá khứ đơn, will thành would, can thành could. Đại từ cũng phải đổi theo người kể. that có thể bỏ. Bẫy thường gặp: say không có tân ngữ người, tell thì bắt buộc có: He said me ✗, He told me ✓ hoặc He said that ✓.
