Cả hai đều mở mệnh đề nghi vấn gián tiếp, nhưng chỉ whether dùng được sau giới từ, trước to V, ở vị trí chủ ngữ, và khi đi liền or not. if chỉ dùng ở vị trí tân ngữ sau động từ. Bẫy thường gặp: Sau giới từ và trước to V phải dùng whether: depends on if she agrees ✗, depends on whether she agrees ✓.
