Đặt ở đầu câu, much as và as much as không so sánh mà nhượng bộ: dù rất muốn nhưng vẫn không. Vế sau bao giờ cũng lật ngược ý vế trước. Đây là mẫu rất hay dùng để từ chối một cách nhã. Bẫy thường gặp: Vế sau phải ngược ý, nếu cùng ý thì mẫu này sai: Much as I admire her, I support her fully ✗.
