while có hai nghĩa, thời gian và đối lập, nên trong văn viết dễ gây tối nghĩa. whilst là biến thể Anh Anh chỉ dùng nghĩa đối lập và mang giọng trang trọng. whereas thì chỉ đối lập, không bao giờ chỉ thời gian, nên là lựa chọn an toàn nhất trong văn học thuật. Bẫy thường gặp: Muốn nghĩa đối lập rõ ràng thì dùng whereas: While he read, she wrote có thể hiểu là cùng lúc hoặc là đối lập.
