Không phải lúc nào cũng lùi thì. Giữ nguyên thì khi điều được nói vẫn còn đúng, khi đó là chân lý chung, khi động từ tường thuật ở hiện tại, hoặc khi mốc thời gian trong câu vẫn chưa qua. Bẫy thường gặp: Lùi thì máy móc làm sai nghĩa: She said she was coming tonight nghe như tối đó đã qua, còn is coming là tối nay vẫn tới.
