Nhóm would, could, might, should và ought to KHÔNG đổi tiếp vì đã ở dạng quá khứ. must giữ nguyên khi chỉ suy đoán, chỉ đổi thành had to khi chỉ bắt buộc. Bẫy thường gặp: must chỉ bắt buộc thì đổi: He said we must wait ✗ trong tường thuật quá khứ, He said we had to wait ✓.
